This photo album is just one of many from the extensive Frederick Smithies collection.  Frederick Smithies (1885 - 1979) conservationist, bush-walker, wilderness explorer and photographer was born at Ulverstone on the 16 August 1885, but lived most of his life in Launceston where he was the manager of the Launceston branch of the Atlas Assurance Company from April 1912 until his retirement fifty years later in April 1962. ;;;;In middle age he became an enthusiastic bushwalker, exploring the natural environment of his own state. The works of Lily Allport are all impressive and c The works of Lily Allport are all impressive and captivating in their own right, but this "Portrait of a girl in a purple garment with a greenish background" has always captured the imagination, making it a favourite piece in the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts collection.

As with many of Lily Allport’s works, it is unsigned and undated, with no information about its subject. There is an enigmatic quality to the girl's expression, and the visual effect of the green background, the purple jacket and her striking blue eyes is utterly mesmerising...
