🎞️ #FilmFriday Last year the @statelibrary.ar 🎞️ #FilmFriday Last year the @statelibrary.archives.tas moved from our repository in Berriedale to our new facility in Geilston Bay. With so many precious Tasmanian records in our custody and many more to collect, we needed more room. However for many decades the Berriedale facility was home to the Treasures and records of Tasmania’s history. This guided tour of the Berriedale Repository by Government Archivist Nicki Ottavi offers a behind the scenes look at the Tasmanian Archives #librariestasmania #tasarchives #statelibraryoftasmania #librariesofinstagram #archivesofinstagram #tasmania #berriedale #hobartandbeyond #tassiehistory #tasmanianhistory #getcurious

#TuesdayTreasures ⭐️ This toy theatre set from #TuesdayTreasures ⭐️ This toy theatre set from c.1740 is made up of six panels, creating a three-dimensional view of a dramatic whaling scene. In the centre of the scene a group of five Dutch ships cluster around a group of breaching whales, a group of men in two small row boats can be seen harpooning whales. In the lower left corner of the scene two polar bears are sitting on ice.
The toy theatre drops were printed in Amsterdam by Louis Foubert. Not a great deal is known about Foubert, although he is known to have been active in Amsterdam from the 1730s, particularly printing illustrated books, including works on the latest fashionable dances. From the early seventeenth-century the hunting of bowhead whales in the waters off Greenland had been fiercely pursued by several European nations, not least among them the Dutch, who founded their Noordsche Compagnie in 1614. A century later, Dutch whaling was a massive operation, sending scores of vessels into the region. 📷 State Library of Tasmania: Set of printed toy theatre drops depicting whaling scenes / by Louis Foubert ; Boekverkoper in de Gaaper Steeg, de Groen Lantse Vissery.
