Begging for bigamy

In November of 1878, two women from Waratah in the North West of Tasmania began a quest to marry one man. They were happy to share him between them, as long as they could do it with the blessing of a church.  Continue reading “Begging for bigamy”

Tomorrow, 11 November, is Remembrance Day, the ann Tomorrow, 11 November, is Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918.

As a mark of respect, Australians are encouraged to pause at 11:00 am on 11 November to observe one minute’s silence to acknowledge those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

These photos from the the Crowther collection show field ambulances and medical personnel during the First World War. William Crowther was born in Hobart in 1887, a proud fourth-generation Tasmanian. Like his great-grandfather, grandfather and father he was a medical practitioner and during the First World War he served with distinction as an army medical officer at Gallipoli and the Western Front.

Happy 1st birthday to the Tasmanian Archives Repos Happy 1st birthday to the Tasmanian Archives Repository in Geilston Bay, Hobart which relocated from its former facility in Berriedale. The relocation started on 26 September 2022 and the last archival box was placed on the shelves on 3 November 2022.

The move saw 23.5 kilometres of records, volumes, objects and audio visual items relocated to the new site.

The new facility not only offers the precious archives a better environment and growth, it has also improved workflows and facilities for staff.

Enjoy this peek inside the building, including the sweeping panorama at the end!

Today, 2 November 2023, is a celebration of all th Today, 2 November 2023, is a celebration of all things digital preservation with World Digital Preservation Day! This year's theme is 'Digital Preservation: A Concerted Effort'.

In a huge achievement for the Tasmanian Archives, more than 5 000 film and magnetic tape items in the audio-visual collection are now digitised, rehoused and restored, thanks to the methodical work of a small team of archivists, digital services, conservation and System Support and Delivery staff at Libraries Tasmania.

Due to the risk of tape degradation and technology becoming obsolete, there is a project to digitise the entire film and magnetic media collection held by the Tasmanian Archives by 2025 at the very latest.

Enjoy some highlights from recently digitised items in the collection. You can read more about them and other items on the Tasmanian Archives blog - link in bio 🔗

Exciting news! Nipaluna/Hobart has just been award Exciting news! Nipaluna/Hobart has just been awarded the title of 'City of Literature' from the United Nations Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). 🎉 📚

Libraries Tasmania Executive Director Sue McKerracher said, "Nipaluna/Hobart has a fantastic history of storytelling dating back thousands of years. It includes the publication of Australia’s first novel in 1818 and the success of contemporary award-winning writers. This is clearly a literary city and state, but it’s also a place where low literacy is a challenge."

"We plan to take advantage of this designation at the State Library in Hobart and through our statewide public library network to promote reading, writing and a love of books as something for everyone," she said.

Nipaluna/Hobart joins other Cities of Literature, including Melbourne, Manchester, and Milan in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network.

🗳️ Did you know there have been 44 referendum 🗳️ Did you know there have been 44 referendums held in Australia's history to propose changes to our Constitution? Tomorrow’s referendum will be  number 45.
Even the draft Australian Constitution document was put to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote through referendums held from 1899 to 1900, as shown in this fascinating photo taken in Hobart. People are gathered outside the Mercury & Tasmanian Mail offices in Hobart as referendum results start to trickle in for Tasmania. The large board at the left shows Hobart and Launceston numbers, along with NSW and South Australia. Imagine waiting for results by horse! These days we’re lucky to have analysts on television let us know within hours. As we know, the result of the referendum to approve the Constitution was 'yes’ and the Constitution took effect on 1 January 1901 🗳️
