It’s International Literacy Day. In 1949, the St It’s International Literacy Day. In 1949, the State Library of Tasmania initiated a new venture: a Bookmobile filled with library books for people to borrow. ‘Kranky Kate”, as the bookmobile was lovingly known, travelled around greater Hobart, and into the countryside providing a vital service to rural communities. By the time this film was produced in 1962, Kranky Kate had been put out to pasture and a new modern bus had been commissioned. This film shows the importance and benefit of such initiatives to the community, for learning and literacy.

An exhibition capturing the daily lives and experi An exhibition capturing the daily lives and experiences of two sisters exploring Tasmania’s east coast 160 years ago opens at the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts on August 11.

In 'Dear Kate: the vision of the Mitchell women', Tasmania artist Jane Giblin has created a striking new body of original lithographs and watercolours in response to the drawings of Mitchell sisters, Catherine and Sarah.

Catherine was affectionately known as Dear Kate and created hundreds of detailed pen, ink and wash drawings which her sister, Sarah preserved in The Sarah Mitchell Scrapbook, with hundreds of her own handwritten notes.

Jane Giblin is a descendant of the extended Mitchell family. “I learn about most things by drawing, and so I began copying little details from Kate’s works," Jane explains. "I learnt about her vision and the quite unusual inclusion of herself in most of her works. My watercolours and lithographs in this show respond to some of the details I have enjoyed in Kate’s works over the past few years."

A version of the scrapbook and original Mitchell works will also be on display for the first time. Jane will also be holding workshops related to the exhibition.

Dear Kate is at 91 Murray Street, Nipaluna/Hobart until 10 November 2023.

🎭 Social historian and playwright Cate Whittake 🎭 Social historian and playwright Cate Whittaker gave a fascinating talk at the State Library this week about Elizabeth Fry, who tirelessly campaigned and successfully legislated for improved conditions for women prisoners. Elizabeth's ideas reached Van Diemens Land where they influenced Lady Jane Franklin, wife of the Governor of Van Diemens Land between 1837-1843.

If you want to learn more about Elizabeth Fry's impact and this period of history, Cate's play 'Forgotten' is at the @theplayhousetheatre this Friday 14 to Sunday 16 July. #statelibraryoftasmania #librariestasmania #archivesofinstagram #librariesofinstagram #hobart #hobartandbeyond #tasmanianhistory #getcurious
