School admission records can provide the family hi School admission records can provide the family history researcher with fascinating insights into the lives of relatives. We are gradually transcribing a selection of our early school admission registers such as the one from the Charles Street State School previously located at 233 Charles Street, Launceston. If you know a relative attended this school in the early 1900's you can now search for them using our Tasmanian Names Index. Other details will be revealed such as parents occupation, residence, date of birth and previous school attended 🔔🏢👫

This lovely little map marks out the houses of families whose children attended Sidmouth Primary school in 1900-1921. It was drawn inside the front cover of the school admissions register. This was not a requirement of the education department, so it seems that the teachers just wanted to know who lived where. 🏡

Celebrating 150 years of Tasmanian Railways! On th Celebrating 150 years of Tasmanian Railways! On the 10th February 1871, the first stretch of railway in Tasmania was officially opened to great celebration, but also great relief! It had been a difficult and expensive task, thirteen years in the making. The first track ran from Launceston to Deloraine, and was described as ‘a new era in the history of material progress in Tasmania’ (The Mercury, 13 Feb 1871, p.2).

Fancy heading out for a nautical buffet and candle Fancy heading out for a nautical buffet and candlelight supper this weekend? In Hobart, we are celebrating Regatta Day and all things maritime. To 'pile Pelion on Ossa' 🗻🏔means to complic To 'pile Pelion on Ossa' 🗻🏔means to complicate something that is already difficult. It is a reference to a story from Greek Myth in which two giants - Otus and Ephialtes - piled the mountains on top of each other in an effort to reach heaven - Mt Olympus ⛰ - and challenge the gods. Tasmanian bushwalkers may sympathise with this idiom. If you are already walking the overland track, adding on the summits of Mt Pelion and Mt Ossa might seem like a bit much. However, the payoff would probably be better than what the giants faced. No matter how bad the weather, you are unlikely to be lashed to pillars of Hades with snakes 🐍 and forced to endure the screeching of owls for eternity 🦉. No guarantees, though.

If the myth had been played out in Tasmania the act of stacking mountains would have been utterly futile, as Ossa alone looms over Olympus by 168 metres.

There are a whole gammut of geographical features in Tasmania named for Greek Mythology 🧜‍♂️. Check out library titles such as @stephenfryactually 's Mythos (available as an audio book 🎧📖) to find out the stories behind these names.

Are you curious about the history of the land at y Are you curious about the history of the land at your feet? Is there a plot of land that has been in your family for generations?
🖤💛♥️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
The Tasmanian Names Index now includes records of 23,383 deeds of land grants to Tasmanian colonists between 1832-1935. You can find them under the new category ‘Land’.
🏞
You can SEARCH these records by the name of the deed holder and the location. In the grant itself you will find reference points to indicate the precise location and boundaries of the plot. These often include names of neighbouring landholders or geographic features.

These were not the free land grants offered before 1831, but a grant by purchase from the Crown. The deed shows how much money was paid. For example, Henry Dobson paid 145 pounds for 1 acre in 1877, on what is now Wynyard Street in South Hobart. This would be about $19,823 in today’s terms. What a steal for land along the Hobart Rivulet! By contrast, in 1886, 110 pounds (or $14,233) bought William Baldock 99 acres in Poatina, Westmorland.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers on #Digivol for your work on the transcription of this valuable resource
